Extracurricular Activities at Gorham Fayette High School

Though Gorham Fayette may be a small school, it offers a wide variety of sports, clubs, and events in which the student body is invited to participate. There are academic clubs at GFHS such as: The National Honor Society (NHS), Language Club, Art Club, Industrial Technology Club, and Science Club. A student may elect to use a study hall to assist in the high school office, the guidance counselor's office, or the Learning Resource Center (LRC). For those who are interested in journalism, the newspaper and yearbook staffs could always use a helping hand. Students wishing to demonstrate their knowledge can participate on the Quiz Team.

There is a great technology education lab for those interested in woodworking, welding, engines, and other industrial technology activities. In 1997 the technology lab put in a class room for the student in Industrial Arts I class. Having grown over the past few years, our Computer Lab houses many Macintosh computers and printers that the students can use to create whatever their imagination allows.

Another activity that reaps great rewards for our school is Science Fair. Each year, students that are enrolled in science classes are to develop a hypothesis and perform an experiment on any scientific topic of their choice. In the past five years, Gorham Fayette High has annually sponsored between seven and ten participants at the state level science fair. Over the past 20 years, Fayette has had 19 students attend International Science and Engineering Fair as either finalists or student observers. The Local Science Fair is held in the high school gymnasium, Regional Science Fair is held at Founders Hall in Archbold, OH, District Science Fair is held at The Defiance College in Defiance, OH, State Science Fair is held at OHIO Wesleyan, and International Science Fair is held this year in Louisville, Kentucky.

Juniors and Seniors look forward to attending the Junior-Senior Prom each year. The Senior classes are so small in number that they usually enjoy the perk of having a senior trip.

In the athletic area Fayette students have many sports in which they can participate. In the fall, the student can choose golf, cross-country, and volleyball. In the winter, the choice is limited to basketball or cheerleading. In the spring, baseball, softball, and track are among the sports that the athlete can choose. The coaches and staff do an excellent job with teaching the students the right behaviors to display on and off the floor.

These people will be more than a coach to their athletes, they will be a friend when they need it and an advisor when need be. These sports have brought great success and these successes are displayed by banners that hang in the gymnasium and by the trophies in the trophy case located in the lobby.
