Located north of the community park and the Normal Memorial Library is the Fayette School Building. The Fayette building houses a preschool, grades one and two, and the Gorham Fayette Junior/Senior High School. The building was completed in 1929. Major additions were added in 1953 and an arts wing was added in 1973. A new elementary wing, restrooms, gymnasium, and locker rooms will be added to the Fayette building in 1998. Excellent playing fields and one of Ohio's first metric tracks are located within the adjoining community park.
During the 1997-98 school year, the school district's total enrollment was 509 students with a pupil/teacher ratio of 16.1 to 1. Specialists in art and physical education serve grades K-12. A music specialist serves grades 1-12. Students are fortunate to be assisted by several active parent support groups.
Gorham Fayette Schools provide a model preschool and kindergarten program that have been observed by numerous visiting educators. Parents and sixth grade students volunteer to assist in the kindergarten. Our community preschool is operated by Northwest Ohio Community Action and funded by tuition and a grant from the Ohio Department of Education.
Reading and math are emphasized throughout the elementary school. Students have the opportunity to take part in the Great Books program and state recognized Newberry Books program. All sixth graders participate in two outdoor education experiences and a self-esteem program titled Quest.
The Basics are emphasized in junior high. Every junior high student is placed in an appropriate reading class. Junior high students also participate in a computer programming class. Work and family life and industrial technology classes are also offered.
A wide variety of extra-curricular activities are available to students in grades 7-12. Numerous student groups and clubs exist as well as activities in fine arts, sports, and science. A high percentage of students participate in extra-curricular activities. Click here to see more about extracurricular activities at GFHS
