HOLGATE LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
The three communities that make up the Holgate Local School
District are small villages in Northwest Ohio. They are rural farming
communities in Henry county. Holgate, the largest of the communities,
has a population of 1315. New Bavaria has a population 135, while
fewer than 100 people reside in Pleasant Bend.
The land around these communities is fertile farmland that harvests
wheat, soy beans, corn, and other cash crops. This farmland is very
flat. It was part of The Great Black Swamp that was settled in the
1850's by German immigrants. The early settlers drained the swamp
with a system of ditches and cleared the land for farming.
This area is also the home of Boy Scout Troop 87 in the Black Swamp
Council. Boys between the ages of ten and eighteen are eligible for
membership in the troop. The troop is active in community service
projects and has several camping trips each year. The troop plans a
week long trip every summer. Past trip locations include hiking at
Picture Rocks, canoeing in Minnesota, white water rafting in
Pennsylvania, and sea kayaking at Apostle Islands, Lake Superior.
