Welcome to

Mr. Kohl's Web Page

Mr. Kohl is an alumni of Holgate High School (1971) and a graduate of Bowling Green State University (1975). He earned his masters degree in secondary education from the College of Mount Saint Joseph in 1984. Mr. Kohl has also taken post graduate classes at Michigan State University, University of Ashland, Dayton University, Walsh College, Defiance College, Toledo University and BGSU.  He is currently taking classes at the University of Findlay to learn more about using technology in the classroom.

Mr. Kohl has been teaching Industrial Technology for the past 30 years. He first taught two years at Portsmouth Northwest High School before coming back to his home town.

Industrial Technology has been called many things over time.  Years ago it was called Manual Arts, Industrial Arts, and later became Industrial Technology.  Woodworking has been the basis of these classes for years.  Although this may be true, Mr. Kohl has taught other classes related to this field of study. Holgate has offered classes in Architecture, Engineering, Manufacturing, Furniture Refinishing and  Visual Communications to go along with the woodworking background.

Reading

Mr. Kohl has been teaching some form of reading since 1993 in either the high school or the middle school.  In the past, Mr. Kohl has used a reading class to produce the school newspapers: "Da Scoop" and the "Purple Pages."

More recently, a "Reading for Enjoyment" program has been used to encourage students to read. The goal of this program is to provide a motivational device for students to practice their reading skills with good literature that can be chosen at various reading levels and individual preferences.   The theory behind this program is that any skill needs practice for development and improvement. Reading is no exception!  See what these students are reading! (Student Journals)
This program was also used to get students to read during the summer months.

Mr. Kohl has been teaching "Visual Communications" classes for the past five years.  The classes were created to teach students how to use the computer for communicating ideas through the use of desktop publishing and web page design.  Students in these classes have learned how to use computer software for drawing, painting, graphing, and word processing. They have also learned how to use a digital camera and how to edit graphics or images. Students  spend time in class learning HTML, Front Page, and Netscape Composer to develop several web pages.  Hands-on techniques are used to get the students proficient in using computer commands and programs. Later classes will continue to develop web pages and will learn how to use iMovie to create slide show DVDs.

Students will be writing blog entries to record what they learn on a weekly basis.
