MISCELLANEOUS:

Fire Drills/Tornado Drills:

Fire drills are held monthly. When the fire bell rings, students are to leave the building by the exit posted in each classroom. Tornado drills will be held in the spring of the year. These will be given over the intercom. Students are requested to behave and conduct themselves in an orderly and serious manner.

Insurance:

School accident insurance is available to all students. Application forms will be available on the first day of school.

School Pictures:

Individual pictures will be taken in the fall of the year. Information will be sent home prior to the taking of these pictures.

Report Cards:

Report cards will be issued after the end of each nine week grading period. It is the responsibility of each student to see their report cards get home and are discussed with parents. Grading periods conclude on the following dates with report cards being sent home one week after the quarter ends:

Free Lunch Program:

Forms for this program will be sent home on the first day of school.

Telephone:

The telephone may be used by absolute necessity. Students who find it necessary to use the phone should obtain permission from the secretary or the principal. Students are not to be excused from class to use the phone except in an emergency.

School Bus:

Students are required to ride the school bus unless they bring a note stating they have other transportation home. All students needing alternative transportation needs to or from school must bring a note from home explaining the need and giving parental permission for a transportation adjustment. No junior high students are to ride in high school student cars to or from school.

Dress Code:

Students at Tinora Junior High School are expected to be well groomed and clothing should be clean, neat, appropriate, and in good repair. Dress or appearance that constitutes a threat to student health or safety, disrupts the education process, damages school property, or is blatant exhibitionism is prohibited. Jean shorts or dress shorts no shorter than four inches above the knee may be worn year round. This prohibits boxer, gym, biker, spandex, and other similar casual shorts. If frequent violations of the dress code occur, the building principal may ban all shorts.

To insure continuity in the school, the following are examples of inappropriate dress:

  1. Tube, muscle, or tank tops; tops that expose midriff or tops with see-through mesh.

  2. Jeans or clothes that are torn, have holes, frayed legs or sleeves.

  3. Clothing that bears messages with profanity, inappropriate wording, promotion of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, or are overly suggestive in nature; included are pins, decals, or patches attached to clothing

  4. Hats, sunglasses, thongs, and shorts - except as stated above

  5. Absence of appropriate undergarments or footwear

  6. Skirts shorter than three inches above the knee.

  7. Coats and outer garments must be kept in the student's locker throughout the school day.

  8. Jeans, pants, slacks or shorts not worn about the waist and fastened with a belt.

Hair:

Hair must be kept clean and well groomed. No streaks, or dyes of abnormal color, etc. will be permitted. Mustaches are permitted, but are not to extend below the upper lip. Beards are not permitted and students must be clean shaven. Side burns should not extend more than one inch below the earlobe.

No students shall wear, possess, or display any clothing, jewelry, emblem, symbol or other items that evidences or reflects membership in, or affiliation with any gang. This includes, but is not limited to pocket chains, bandannas, headbands, sweatbands, or oversized clothing.

In a case of Dress Code violation, a student will be sent home unless the violation can be corrected at school. If no transportation is available, the student will remain in the office for the remainder of the day. All class time missed will be unexcused absence. Violations may also result in reprimand, detention, Saturday School, or suspension.

Accidents:

All accidents to either persons or property in the school building, on the school grounds, at practice sessions, or at any school-sponsored event must be reported to the principal.

Hall Passes:

Students are expected to be in class at all times class is in session. Only during emergencies are students to be in the halls, at their lockers, or in the restrooms during class. Any student who is in the hall for any reason during class time must have a hall pass. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Hall Monitor:

Student monitors will be placed on the second floor throughout the school day. They will assist the kindergarten teachers and students.

Illness:

In the event you become ill at school, you should notify the teacher of the class you are in and then report to the office. Ill students will be sent home or kept for a period of time in the clinic. If it is necessary for the student to go home, the office will call home to make arrangements for you to be picked up. You must sign out and you must be picked up in the Junior High office. Students who leave after 10:00 a.m. or before 2:00 p.m. will be counted absent for one-half day. Students who leave before 10:00 a.m. and do not return will be charged with a days absence. No drugs will be distributed unless you bring them in from home with a note. First aid supplies are available in the office. All student medication must be kept in the Junior High Principal's office.

Pregnancy Policy:

For purposes of mandatory school attendance, the student is required to return to school within six weeks of the termination of pregnancy. A written approval from the student's physician is required for the return to school, or for any necessary medical delay beyond six weeks from date the pregnancy ended.

Absences during pregnancy will require an excuse by the student's physician.

Study Hall:

The study hall is provided as a place for students to work on their school assignments. Students are required to have something to do in study hall at all times. Students are to have a note from the teacher if they would like to work with another student on class work. If a student has a note to report to someplace other than study hall, the note should be given to the Study Hall Monitor the first three minutes of the period.

Textbooks:

These are issued by the teacher at the beginning of the course. Students are responsible for the books assigned to them. For any damage to textbooks, the student will be fined at the end of the school year. All textbooks must have a book cover on them.

Bad Weather:

There are times when school is delayed or canceled for the day due to the weather. School announcements are made on three radio stations: WONW-Defiance 1280, WDFM-98.1, and WZOM-105.7 In the event school is canceled for the day, all extracurricular activities are also canceled except under special circumstances which are determined by the administration.

Events:

The bulletin board in the Junior High lobby will contain a schedule of the main events or activities for the month.

Lockers:

Each student is assigned a locker at the beginning of the school year. These lockers are provided for students to store books, materials, coats, etc. Locks are strongly recommended on these lockers. The school reserves the right to inspect any student's locker at any time. (Valuables should not be kept in your locker). All students are to store items only in the locker the school has assigned to them. Any other lockers are off limits.

Locks:

Locks will be sold the first four weeks of school at a price of $4.00 per lock. All locks placed on lockers must be registered in the Junior High office. Only combination locks are permitted on lockers. If a student brings a lock from home, it must be registered in the Junior High office.

Lost and Found:

A lost and found is located in the office. Students who find articles should take them to the office. Lost and found items will be discarded after two weeks.

  1. Bring authorization note from parents.
  2. Obtain form from the counselor or secretary.
  3. Have the form filled out by each teacher.
  4. Take the completed form to the counselor or secretary for withdrawal.

Athletic Eligibility Policy:

Any athlete or cheerleader will remain eligible by passing four out of five academic subjects. This includes math, history, science, English, and reading. In addition, students must pass 75% of all of their classes. All eligibility will be on a quarterly basis. State eligibility regulations are listed in the back of this handbook.

All participants must have a physical and permission from their parents to practice or play. (Parental permission is on the physical card.) Actions by a particular team member or members which reflect unfavorably upon the school or team will be subject to review by the coach and principal and disciplinary actions will be taken. All Tinora Junior High athletes will be required to follow the Tinora athletic code of ethics.

Class Fees:

All class fees must be paid by the end of September in order for the student to receive his/her grade card. Any student who has not paid class fees will not be allowed to attend any student-paid field trip (Example: 8th grade Cedar Point trip) or participate in 8th grade graduation ceremonies.

Student Librarians:

This organization will be formed to promote an interest in the school library media center. Students will review new additions to the library, assist in the operation and maintenance of the center and support related activities of interest to the school and students. They also work on the yearbook.

Ram Student of the Month:

Each month of the school year, one or two 7th and 8th graders will be selected "Tinora Junior High Students of the Month." Students will be nominated and selected for this honor by the Tinora Junior High Faculty according to the following guidelines.

  1. Significant academic improvement or continuous academic success.

  2. Any significant accomplishments of student attitude improvements.

  3. Continued or improved social behavior and excellence.

  4. Students displaying positive leadership qualities.

  5. Open area for marked improvement in any aspect of a student.

This honor is not intended to be a popularity contest. Rather, it is to draw attention to positive student accomplishments in our Junior High.

Guidance:

All 7th grade students will receive one quarter of a concentrated guidance program to help them adjust to adolescence.

Assertive Discipline:

All classroom teachers will be enforcing assertive discipline in their classes for the coming school year. Each teacher will explain and review their assertive discipline plans periodically throughout the year to students. All students are expected to abide by each teacher's assertive discipline plan.

Homework Detention Hall:

All students who fail to complete or turn in their daily homework will be required to attend a daily detention hall until all daily homework is caught up. Detention hall will be held from 12:15-12:30 p.m.
